When the power goes out, a portable generator can keep your essentials running. But what if one generator is not enough to handle everything you need? Many homeowners wonder if it is possible to connect two generators to their home. The short answer is yes, you can, as long as it is done safely, correctly, and in compliance with electrical code.

At Envision Electrical Solutions, we recently helped a homeowner in Broward County, Florida, who faced this exact challenge. He wanted reliable backup power for a large home but did not want to spend nearly $40,000 on a full standby generator system that required a buried propane tank and major site work.

The Challenge

A single portable generator and standard 8-circuit transfer panel would not have provided enough capacity to run all of his essential circuits. He needed more power to keep his air handler, refrigerator, garage, lighting, and several other important circuits running during an outage.

The Solution

Our team designed and installed a dual generator system using two Champion 50 amp transfer switches and two generator inlets. This setup allows the homeowner to safely run two portable generators at the same time, distributing power across 16 selected circuits throughout the home.

This approach gave him the power flexibility of a whole-home system while staying safe, efficient, and fully code compliant. Even after purchasing two large portable generators, his total investment was less than half to one third of the cost of a full standby system.

Why Whole-House Standby Generators Are Often Cost-Prohibitive

While standby generators are convenient, they can be cost prohibitive for many homeowners. Between the generator itself, the automatic transfer switch, fuel source installation (such as a buried propane tank), permitting, and labor, most complete systems end up costing $20,000 to $40,000 or more.

For many families, that price tag simply does not make sense — especially when a properly designed dual-portable generator setup can achieve the same core goal for a fraction of the cost.

Advantages of a Dual-Portable Generator Setup

More capacity: Power up to 16 essential circuits instead of just a few.
Lower cost: Usually half to one third the price of a full standby generator system.
Flexibility: Choose which generators to run based on your power needs.
Safety: Professionally installed transfer switches prevent backfeeding and protect both your home and utility workers.

Important Safety Note

Never attempt to connect multiple generators to your home using extension cords or improvised wiring. Doing so can create dangerous backfeed conditions and serious electrical hazards. Always hire a licensed electrical contractor who understands how to properly balance loads and install transfer equipment in compliance with local codes.
