Discover how generator interlock kits offer a safe, cost-effective way to connect your generator to your South Florida home. Learn about installation and legal requirements.

If you own a portable generator and want to connect it safely and legally to your home, a generator interlock kit is one of the most practical and cost effective solutions available. It is also one of the most misunderstood. Homeowners frequently have questions about what an interlock kit actually is, how it works, whether it is the right solution for their home, and what the installation process involves.
This guide answers all of those questions so you can make an informed decision about your home's backup power setup before hurricane season peaks.
What Is a Generator Interlock Kit?
A generator interlock kit is a mechanical device installed directly on your existing electrical panel that allows you to safely connect a portable generator to your home's electrical system. It works by physically preventing your main breaker and your generator breaker from being in the on position at the same time.
This is the critical safety feature that makes an interlock kit a code-compliant solution. When the main breaker and generator breaker cannot both be on simultaneously it is physically impossible to backfeed power from your generator into the utility lines on your street. That protection is what makes interlock kits legal, safe, and approved by the National Electrical Code.
How Does It Actually Work?
The interlock kit consists of a metal slide or plate that is installed over your main breaker and generator breaker positions on your panel. The design of the slide allows only one of the two breakers to be in the on position at any given time. If the main breaker is on the slide physically blocks the generator breaker from being switched on, and vice versa.
When a power outage occurs here is the sequence of events:
✅ You turn off your main breaker ✅ The interlock slide now allows your generator breaker to be switched on ✅ You start your generator outside and allow it to warm up ✅ You plug your generator into the dedicated inlet box installed on the outside of your home ✅ You switch on your generator breaker ✅ You then go through your individual circuit breakers and turn on the circuits you want to power, leaving off the ones you do not need to avoid overloading your generator
When utility power is restored the process reverses. You turn off the circuits, switch off the generator breaker, disconnect the generator, and turn your main breaker back on.
What Can an Interlock Kit Power?
This is where a lot of homeowners are genuinely surprised. An interlock kit does not limit you to a handful of pre-selected circuits the way some other backup power solutions do. Because it works through your existing panel and your existing breakers, an interlock kit gives you the capability to power every circuit in your home from your portable generator.
The practical limitation is not the interlock kit itself. It is the capacity of your generator. A quality portable generator in the 10,000 to 13,000 watt range can power a significant amount of a modern South Florida home simultaneously including central AC, refrigerator, lights, fans, Wi-Fi, and everyday appliances. The key is understanding your generator's capacity and managing which breakers you turn on accordingly so you do not exceed it.
What Does the Installation Involve?
A generator interlock kit installation involves two main components. The first is the interlock slide mechanism itself which is installed on your existing panel. The second is a generator inlet box, sometimes called a power inlet box, which is mounted on the outside of your home and provides the connection point between your generator and your panel through a dedicated generator circuit wired to a new breaker in your panel.
The installation requires running wiring from the inlet box to the panel, installing the dedicated generator breaker, and fitting the interlock slide. The entire installation is typically completed in a single visit by a licensed electrician.
One important note: depending on the age, brand, and condition of your existing electrical panel, additional work may sometimes be required before an interlock kit can be installed. Your electrician will evaluate your panel during the consultation and let you know exactly what is involved before any work begins.
Is an Interlock Kit Right for Every Home?
An interlock kit is a great solution for most South Florida homes with a portable generator. However there are situations where a different approach may be more appropriate.
If you have a whole home standby generator that activates automatically a transfer switch rather than an interlock kit is the appropriate solution since automatic operation requires a different type of switching mechanism.
If you want a cleaner installation with pre-selected essential circuits already wired and ready without managing individual breakers during an outage a selective circuit transfer switch panel may be a better fit. We cover the comparison between interlock kits and selective circuit transfer switches in detail in a separate post.
If your existing panel is outdated, undersized, or in poor condition a panel replacement may need to happen before an interlock kit installation can proceed.
Is an Interlock Kit Legal and Code Compliant?
Yes, when professionally installed by a licensed electrician a generator interlock kit is a fully code-compliant solution under the National Electrical Code. The key word is professionally installed. A properly installed interlock kit will pass inspection and meet all current code requirements for your jurisdiction in Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
Do not attempt to install an interlock kit yourself. The installation involves working inside your electrical panel and running new circuits, work that requires a licensed electrician and in most jurisdictions a permit and inspection.
The Alternative to an Interlock Kit: What Not to Do
No discussion of generator interlock kits is complete without addressing what some homeowners do instead. A device commonly called a suicide cord, which is a male to male extension cord plugged directly from a generator into a wall outlet, is sometimes used as a shortcut to power a home from a generator. This is illegal, extremely dangerous, and has killed utility workers who encountered backfed power lines without knowing they were energized.
An interlock kit is not an expensive solution. The cost of a professional installation is a fraction of the risk and liability associated with an improper generator connection. If you are currently using any method other than a professionally installed interlock kit or transfer switch to connect your generator to your home please stop immediately and call a licensed electrician.
